PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to form a high silver chloride (111) type grains without hindering adsorption of a spectral sensitizing dye to silver halide grains by using a specified pyrimidine compound as a crystallization vice controller. SOLUTION: The silver halide grains have a silver chloride content of >=80 mol.% and >=50% of the surfaces areas of the silver halide grains comprise spectrally sensitized faces (111) and these grains occupy >=50% of the projection areas of the total silver halide grains and they have been grown in the presence of the pyrimidine compound represented by the formula in which R<1> is an H or halogen atom or 1-6 C alkyl or carboxyl or cyano group; and R<2> is a carboxyl or cyano group. It is preferred that the C number of this alkyl group is 1-5 and furthermore, 1-4. These silver halide grains are flat grains having an average thickness of <=0.5μm and an average spect ratio of >=5.
