881,427. Type-printing telegraphy. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH Ltd. May 13, 1959 [May 20, 1958], No. 16186/58. Class 40(3). A tape reader comprises a number of rows of peckers arranged to mate with successive rows of holes in the tape so that several characters may be read simultaneously or in non-consecutive order. One row of eight peckers 11 is shown. Each pecker is connected to a spring 12 separated from a spring 15 by an insulator 16. If a pecker enters a hole in the tape, spring 12 makes contact with bar 14 while if there is no hole the pecker is in a lowered position and spring 15 contacts bar 17. The tape transport mechanism comprises means for gripping the tape and for pulling it forward or pins which engage feed holes in known manner. In the latter case the mechanism comprises relays 2, 3, which rock member 5 about point 6. Tape platform 7, which is carried by member 5, moves substantially vertically to lift the tape clear of the peckers 11. As the peckers are cleared the transport perforations engage with pins mounted on an extension 21 of member 18 which is rocked, by means not shown in Fig. 1, in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the paper to move the tape. The apparatus ceases to operate if no tape is present, or if the tape becomes too tight, the former being sensed by an additional pecker associated with lever 31 and micro-switch 37, and the latter by a further lever, over which the tape is passed, and which operates a second micro-switch. |
