PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing coke that can increase the horizontal coke shrinkage at the end of the coke oven carbonization chamber and can reduce the coke pushing load. SOLUTION: A charge coal having a water content regulated to 0 to 9 wt.% is mixed with 1 to 10 wt.% additive having a larger shrinkage at a temp. of 300 to 800 deg.C than the charge coal. A coke oven carbonization chamber is charged with the mixture followed by carbonization at a temp. of 600 to 900 deg.C. At the time of the introduction of the charge coal having a water content regulated to 0 to 9 wt.% into the coke oven carbonization chamber, a charge coal, which has been mixed with 1 to 10 wt.% additive having a larger shrinkage at a temp. of 300 to 800 deg.C than the charge coal is introduced into the coke oven in its portion around the lid, followed by carbonization. The additive may be an aliph. and/or arom. hydrocarbon having a linear shrinkage of not less than 4×10<-4> K<-1> at a temp. of 300 to 800 deg.C.
