IMAGE ENCODING METHOD AND DEVICE THEREFOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compress the images at a high speed and with high picture quality by performing the edge/flat discrimination of every block against the input image data which are turned into blocks and encoding the edge and flat blocks via the vector quantization and based on the mean value of pixel components contained in the blocks respectively. SOLUTION: The image data inputted from an input/output device 101 are converted into the block data by a blocking device 103 and then sorted into the edge block data and the flat block data by an edge/flat discrimination device 104. The flat block data are converted into the encoding data by a flat block encoding device 105, and the edge block data undergo the vector quantization via an edge block encoding device 109 respectively. Thus, the edge block data are compressed with high precision via the vector quantization, and the flat block data are compressed at a high speed via a simple calculation.
