The invention relates to an exhaust gas conduction system and to a method enabling elimination of noxious substances from the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine operating with excess air, whereby the exhaust gas is conducted through an exhaust pipe into a catalytic converter (7) with parallel flow channels (9). By adapting both the inflow surface (11) of the catalytic converter (7) and the hydraulic diameter of the flow channels (9) to the diameter (3) of the exhaust pipe (2), the counter-pressure of the exhaust gas and thus the tendency of the exhaust gas conduction system to become blocked can be reduced and a high conversion rate for said noxious substances can also be obtained.
