The present invention is directed to methods and apparatus for preparing a magnetic recording medium having a nonmagnetic substrate layer, a back-coat layer containing a metal or semi-metal which has been deposited in a vacuum on one surface of the substrate, a magnetic layer which has been deposited in a vacuum on the other surface of the substrate, and further a top-coat layer which has been sprayed also in a vacuum onto the magnetic layer. Oxygen gas is introduced during depositing of the back-coat layer to obtain a suitable surface resistance of 5 to 10<8> OMEGA .
