Variants of the CCR5 human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) co-receptor which results in a resistance of CCR5-expressing cells to HIV-1 infection. The detection of such mutations may be used to identify individuals at lower risk for infection relative to the general population who, if infected, may exhibit slower progression to AIDS. Further, the present invention provides for oligonucleotide primers and probes and diagnostic methods for detecting the presence of such variants and for methods of inhibiting HIV-1 infection of a cell expressing the CCR5 receptor, comprising introducing, into the cell, a nucleic acid encoding a CCR5 variant.
|
