Restricting client access to WWW pages subsequent to a freely-acquired entrance page. When the WWW browser 4 demands to refer to a page-descriptive file and a relevant data file of the WWW server 5, the server side generates a client-specific character sequence, S4, which it sends to the client, S5, for use in requesting access to the files. If the request is proper (e.g. a reference time has not been exceeded) the server generates new files with the same substantial contents as the requested files but which have new file names which include the user-specific character sequence, S7. The modified files are sent to the browser, S8. Alternatively (fig. 8), the server side generates, and sends to the client, a directory-file name specific to the client and registers a conversion-pair of the client-specific and original file names, and sends the converted files to the client. Charges can be collected by requiring the data to be accessed using assigned telephone numbers (fig. 13).
