The present invention relates to a restraint system which activates with a high reliability level one or more retraint devices if the passengers are exposed to injury in a collision. Said restraint system is fitted with at least one sitting-position sensor (SPS1, SPS2, ...., SPSm), which enables a change in the sitting position of at least one passenger to be detected. A control device defines a first criterion for activating one or more retraint devices (R1, R2, ...., Rk) when the speed of the sitting-position change exceeds a threshold value. The control device (DC) defines a second criterion for triggering the activation of one or more restraint devices (R1, R2, ..., CACm) when one or more pre-crash sensors (PCS1, PCS2, ...., PCSm) indicate that a collision is impending.
