PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for vapor-phase, catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons, which produces industrially useful stocks, e.g. acrylonitrile, acrylic acid and olefins in high yield or selectivity in the presence of a newly developed composite metal oxide catalyst extremely effective for the oxidation. SOLUTION: This method for vapor-phase, catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons uses a composite metal oxide catalyst, containing molybdenum, vanadium and oxygen as the essential elements, and showing a Raman shift of the major peaks by scattered light in Raman spectroscopy appearing at 860 to 895 cm<-1> , wherein the composition of the essential elements except oxygen satisfies the relationships 0.25< rMo<0.98 and 0.003< rV<0.75 (rMo and rV are molar fractions of Mo and V, based on the total essential elements except oxygen). |
