A loading insert for use in loading a sample onto an electrophoresis gel, comprising a substantially rectangular planar base portion (61), a plurality of fingers (62) extending from a first long edge of the base portion in a plane with the upper and lower faces of the base portion, each of said fingers having a defined width and being evenly spaced. Each of said fingers having a tip portion being cut with a 30-60 DEG bevel relative to the plane of the base portion.
