PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a copolymer product having ethylene incorporated therein in a significantly large amount by holding a metallocene catalyst precursor having a specified structure on silica pretreated with an oxyorganoaluminum compound, bringing it into contact with a cocatalyst to form an active catalyst, and introducing the active catalyst into a polymerization zone in which propylene and ethylene are put. SOLUTION: The metallocene catalyst precursor used is represented by the formula (wherein R" is a bridge that connects two cyclopentadienyl rings; b is 1 or 0, showing the presence or absence of the bridge; Cp is a cyclopentadienyl ring; R and R' are each a hydrogenated material, or a 1-9C hydrocarbyl; M is a group IIIB, IVB, VB or VIB metal; R* is a hydrogenated material, halogeno, or a 1-20C hydrocarbyl; and v is the valence of M). Silica is treated with an oxyorganoaluminum compound, suitably alumoxane, to inactivate, and the metallocene catalyst precursor is held thereon, which is brought into contact with a cocatalyst (e.g. an alkylaluminum) to give an active catalyst.
