Artificial fibres are made by slitting thin sheets of foamed polystyrene into long narrow strips and lengthening the cells of the foamed polystyrene in the lengthways direction of the strips. The sheets may be reduced in thickness and increased in area by passing them under tension between pairs of compression rollers before they are slit into narrow strips. The strips or the sheet may be coated with a mixture of a synthetic resin and a substance which softens polystyrene. Alternatively the sheet or the strips cut therefrom may be soaked in a bath of a solution of a synthetic resin in a volatile organic solvent so that the sheet or the strips become impregnated with the solution. The thickness of the vesicular polystyrene sheet prior to its being compressed between rollers may be 0À08 to 0À5 mm. |
