Mountings for semiconductor light emitting devices

A method of making a mounting for a semiconductor laser or L.E.D. comprises forming a step 24 in the top surface 12 of a ceramic substrate, metallising the top surface and the walls 30,32 of the step and cutting a channel 26 perpendicular to the step. Individual mountings are cut from an elongated substrate to provide isolated contact pads 12 for an edge emitting laser or L.E.D.
