PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the simple and efficient removal of impurities from sulfur hexafluoride containing the impurities therein by bringing the sulfur hexafluoride into contact with a purifying agent composed of one or more compounds selected from an alkaline earth metal compound, an alkali metal aluminate and a tetraalkylammonium salt and a carbonaceous solid. SOLUTION: SF6 containing impurities contains one or more selected from the group consisted of HF, SO2 , S2 F2 , SF2 , SF4 , S2 F10 , SOF2 and SO2 F2 . The SF6 is brought into contact with a purifying agent composed of one or more compounds selected from an alkaline earth metal compound, an alkali metal aluminate and a tetraalkylammonium salt and a carbonaceous solid and purified. The alkaline earth metal compound is selected from an oxide, a hydroxide, a carbonate and a nitrate of calcium, magnesium, barium and strontium. The alkali metal aluminate is selected from lithium alminate, sodium aluminate, potassium aluminate and cesium aluminate and the tetraalkylammonium salt it tetramethylammonium hydroxide, etc., carbonaceous solid is one or more of coke powder, coal, pitch, etc. The specific surface area of the purifying agent is 8-1,000 m2 /g.
