PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain diphenyl phthalate capable of being used as an industrially useful solid plasticizer at a low cost by reacting a specific derivative of phthalic acid with phenol in the presence of a specific catalyst. SOLUTION: This diphenyl phthalate is obtained by reacting disodium phthalate with phenol in the presence of phosphorus oxychloride. A preferable molar ratio of disodium phthalate to phenol is 1.5-5.0, preferably 2.0-3.0. A preferable molar ratio of disodium phthalate to phosphorus oxychloride is 1.0-2.0, preferably 1.2-1.4. A preferable reaction temperature is 20-140 deg.C, preferably 30-125 deg.C. As a reaction solvent, toluene, trichloroethylene, heptane, etc., can be used. |
