摘要 The invention seeks to improve reliability of a safety system and to protect passengers in a vehicle from fatal injuries due to an increasing number of front air bag malfunction upon frontal impact and to improve protection in comparison with DE 3801347 C2 (prior art). According to the invention, the manner in which a safety device comprising at least one pair of energy-absorbing limiter units (70, 80, 80a-80e) is optimized by 1) pretensioning of the safety belts (64) within a short time period in order to solve the OOP problem (out of position), 2) dampening of the vibrations, reduction of acceleration, and preservation of the pretensioning force of the safety belts once the set point values have been exceeded, 3) removal of the steering wheel (90) from the driver head impact area until set point values are exceeded, 4) provision of passenger protection when the front air bags and sensors malfunction. The best strategy can be defined on the basis of construction variants for passenger protection minimizing malfunctions, production costs and repair costs through the provision of construction parameters and a more reliable, slower-operating sensor, thereby discarding unreliable costly sensors that carry out innumerable computational operations over a short time period.
