A smoke alarm has a terminal connector (16) with a female terminal (18) and a male terminal (20) for connection to a battery (10) with complementary terminals (12, 14). To one of the battery terminals is welded an adaptor (22) to extend its length and to prevent its use in other appliances. A second loose adaptor (22) is provided to enable the other complementary terminals to be connected.
