Links to the road-wheels are coupled to opposite ends of the track (2), which works in the steering-gear housing (1). The rack teeth mesh with the steering spindle (4), while a piston-rod (2b) is guided in a cylinder (6) in the housing and forms hydraulic chambers (8a, 8b) either side of a partition (7) and which are supplied alternately with hydraulic pressure. The rack also functions as the piston rod, while the portion of the spindle meshing with it also acts as the partition. At each rack end there can be a guiding section of cross-section matching that of the cylinder, the cross-section of the road and rack between these guiding sections being smaller than that of the cylinder, and typically semicircular. A thrust-piece inserted in the housing wall opposite the intermeshing portions of spindle and rack can form a seal between them and the wall.
