<p>A method for manufacture a multi-contoured tape support surface of a magnetic tape head using a computer controlled laser micro-machining tool is disclosed. The method comprises generating a three-dimensional tape head contour model (40) using a computer aided design tool. The contour model is then used in defining a plurality of contour lines (50) on the tape head. Subsequently, the tape head is laser micro-machined (60) along the defined contour lines for forming a number of contour steps on the surface of the tape head. The steps are then fine polished (70) with a lapping tape to form a desired tape support surface geometry.</p> |
