Liquid crystal display device for a color display panel

The device (1) includes a transparent substrate (2), facing the observer, and a second substrate (4) parallel with the first. Both substrates are made of glass or plastic. The second substrate is covered by a light absorbing layer (6) with the two substrates being held together by a sealing frame (8) which defines a cavity (10). The cavity is filled with a liquid crystal. Electrodes are provided on the inner surface of the first substrate. A second group of electrodes, normal to the first group, is provided on the inner surface of the second substrate.
