PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful for a raw material for electronic parts, polymer additives, etc., in a high yield industrially advantageously, by pouring both an aldehyde and an acid catalyst to a mixture of a specific phenol and a solvent. SOLUTION: A mixture of a phenol of the formula I (R<1> to R<4> are each H, a halogen, a lower alkyl or a cycloalkyl) containing at least one hydroxyl group at the o-position or the p-position and a solvent such as benzene, methanol, diethyl ether or ethylene glycol in an amount of 0.1-10 times, preferably 0.5-5 times as much as the phenol is incorporated with an aldehyde in an amount of 0.2-0.7 times mol, preferably 0.4-0.6 times mol of the phenol and an acid catalyst such as sulfuric acid in an amount of 0.1-5 times mol, preferably 0.4-3 times mol by pouring the aldehyde and the acid catalyst to the mixture to give the objective compound of formula II [R<5> to R<8> are each R<1> to R<4> ; R<9> is a (halogenated) lower alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an aryl, etc.].
