The mfr. of polyalkylated xanthenes comprises reacting (a) an oxygenated organic material selected from ketones, spirobichromans and chromans, and (b) an alkylated phenol in a molar ratio (b):(a) of 2-100:1, in the presence of an amt. of organic sulphonic acid as catalyst, at 100-200 deg.C and at a pressure of 1-75 atmospheres. |
