PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a stainless steel having deodorizing properties, capable of realizing the improvement of the living smell environments and suitable as the stock for kitchen articles, interior materials or the like by finely and uniformly dispersing and precipitating a specified amt. ofε-Cu phases consisting essentially of Cu as secondary phases into a matrix. SOLUTION: In a stainless steel of austenitic series, ferritic series, martensitic series, duplex series of the like preferably contg., by mass, about >=11% Cr and about >=0.1% Cu, into the matrix,ε-Cu phases capable of revealing antibacterial operation are finely and uniformly dispersed and precipitated by >=0.1 vol.% as secondary phases essentially consisting of Cu. Thisε-Cu phases are precipitated by adding Cu by about >=0.4 mass % as for martensitic and ferritic stainless steel and by about >=2.0% as for austenitic stainless steel and subjecting the stainless steel to isothermal heating treatment such as aging in theε-Cu phase precipitation enabling temp. region of about 500 to 900 deg.C.
