PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the thermal asperity caused by intermittent and/or continuous contact between a magnetic head and a magnetic disk by providing protrusions, which have the heights and the lengths in specific ranges with a specific density, on the surface of the disk. SOLUTION: On the surface of a magnetic disk, protrusions having lengths 0.1 to 0.4μm and heights 5 to 50 nm are provided with the density of 1 to 10/μm<2> . In a conventional disk, thermal.asperity is generated when a a magnetic head and disk protrusions contact to each other. However, no thermal.asperity is observed on the properly constructed disk even though the pressure of the device is reduced to 0.1 atm and the head floatation height is made less than 5 nm. Moreover, no thermal.asperity is generated even though the head contacts with the disk protrusions. By forming the protrusions, the contact temperature rise is made smaller when an MR element contacts with the protrusions on the surface of the magnetic disk. Thus, the temperature rise of the MR element is reduced and the generation of thermal.asperity is prevented.
