A tyre building drum comprises a fluidimpervious diaphragm 10 of cylindrical form in unexpanded condition and united axially and circumferentially to a member 20 with a bead ring 30 at each end and which restrains the diaphragm when radially expanded. The member 20 may be of integral construction as shown, or comprise separate portions 35, 36 (Fig. 5, not shown) each with a cylindrical section united with the diaphragm 10 and extending either axially inwardly or outwardly of its free end 23. The diaphragm and member 20 may be of elastomeric material reinforced either with plies of radial or cross-laid cords or with discontinuous, docked filamentary material. They may be joined as at 21 by joining respective elastomeric surfaces prior to vulcanization or by interweaving or stitching the cords of the diaphragm with those of the member 20. The central portion of the diaphragm may have concentric grooves in communication with an air line 34 on pressurization of which, a tyre mounted on the drum may be readily removed. The member 20 need not be fluidimpervious. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifccation 1,000,262. |
