PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce ceramics having improved wear resistance by sintering a mixture of a specified amt. of whiskery titanium carbide powder with titanium carbide powder coated with a specified amt. of a metal or alloy. SOLUTION: Titanium carbide powder having <=1 μm grain diameter coated with 3-35 wt.% metal such as Ni, Co or Ti or allay of such metals by sputtering or other method is mixed with 20-80 vol.% whiskery titanium carbide powder having <=0.1 μm diameter. The ratio of the length of the whiskery powder to the diameter is >=10. Stearic acid, an org. binder and a sintering aid such as alumina are further added to the resultant mixture. They are mixed and sintered by hot pressing or other method to obtain the objective ceramics for a cutting tool. The metal or alloy on the surface of the titanium carbide powder is stable up to a high temp., has low reactivity, slightly enters into solid soln. in the titanium carbide and has high adhesion. |
