PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a metal scavenger with no concern for deterioration of its metal-scavenging efficiency even under treatment in the presence of any oxidizing agent or in an acidic condition, by reaction hydrogen sulfide with a vinylnitrile-based polymer. SOLUTION: This metal scavenger is obtained by reaction of hydrogen sulfide with a vinylnitrile-based polymer containing >=5 mol% of nitrile group-bearing polymer unit component to effect introduction of metal-scavenging functional group (salt) bound to the N-atom of the nitrile group. The above-mentioned polymer is pref. prepared, for example, by the following process: a vinylnitrile homopolymer is brought into contact with hydrogen sulfide at normal temperatures to 150 deg.C under normal to higher pressures, or after introduction of the functional group, an alkali such as potassium hydroxide may be reacted. |
