PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a welding condition adapting control method for quick- responsing to the welding of an actual work and moreover obtaining stable welding quality by detecting a root gap based on information of welding phenomena from a high speed rotating arc sensor. SOLUTION: In the case of recognizing the variation of the surface shape of the molten pond right under the arc which varies in accordance with the variation of the root gap G of the groove by the waveform of the welding voltage or current, the waveform in the suitable welding condition to a reference gap is previously stored in a memory 12 as the reference waveform, the areaΔSg of the deviation part of the present waveform to the reference waveform is processed with integrators 14, 15 and a code judging device 16 to obtain the differenceΔSg in the waveform, the characteristic line ofΔSg-G is previously obtained, the gap is recognized from the presentΔSg,ΔSg and the allowable range are compared with a comparator 21, the propriety of the gap is judged from the result, whenΔSg reaches the upper or lower limit of the allowable range, the welding condition is changed into the suitable welding condition to the gap at that time by the welding condition data base 24, and feedback control is executed.
