This invention relates to the process of obtaining proteins and recombinant nucleic acid molecules representing members of the MAP2-kinases family and micro- organisms and cell lines containing recombinant MAP2- kinase molecules. This invention also provides a process for analysing the activity of cell factors, specifically activity of the nerve growth factor, in which MAP2-kinase activation serves as an indicator of the activity of the cell factor. This process can be used to assess compounds in relation to the presence of a desired cell factor activity.
