PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for forming a color image capable of adequately compressing a color region in consideration of a quantity of a coloring material to be used in the reproduction and distribution of coloring materials, and of reproducing a good color image. SOLUTION: An input color signal is obtained (S11). The input color signal is converted to first quantities of coloring materials of CMYK whereby a first distance function is minimized (S12). Color coordinates to be reproduced from the first quantities of coloring materials of CMYK are obtained based on a printer model (S13). When it is determined that the inputted color signal is in a range of color reproduction (S14), the first quantities of coloring materials of CMYK are outputted (S22). When it is determined that the signal is out of the region, a reproduction lightness and an input lightness are compared with each other (S15). When the result is 'reproduction lightness < input lightness', a second distance function is synthesized by using a weight a of the lightness corresponding to a yellow color content (S16-S18). When the result is 'reproduction lightness' input lightness', a second distance function wherein a weightαis constant is synthesized (S19, S20). Second quantities of coloring materials of CMYK whereby the second distance function is minimized (S21) is calculated (S22).
