<p>An activated sludge/sewage mixture is subjected to aeration under conditions of significant horizontal flow by aerating so that the air stream simultaneously draws sewage/sludge mixture by suction from the region of the bottom of the aerating tank in the direction of the flow of sewage and returns it in the same direction below and in the region of the liquid surface level. Fig. 1 shows a baffle arrangement which achieves this result when the tank contents as a whole are stationary. Figs. 3 and 5 (not shown) relate to other arrangements of baffles with continuously flowing sewage. Figs. 2, 4 and 6 (not shown) relate to the shape and design of baffles. The process may take place in circular or elongated tanks giving rotational movement.</p> |
