ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATOR AND ITS OPERATION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrostatic precipitator and a method of operating it in which removability of dust stuck to discharge electrodes and dust collecting electrodes is improved on hammering. SOLUTION: When a boiler is stopped, fresh air enters an electrostatic precipitator 16 and then temperature and humidity in the electrostatic precipitator 16 become the same as those of fresh air. The humidity in the electrostatic precipitator 16 is monitored by a relative humidity measuring device 46. In the case the measured value is a prescribed value determined in advance or less, a signal is inputted into a humidifier 50 from the relative humidity measuring device 46. The humidifier 50 humidifies the inside of the electrostatic precipitator 16 according to the signal to raise the relative humidity to a set value. When the relative humidity rises to the set value, it is left for a prescribed time while it is kept at the set value. When the prescribed time elapsed, discharge electrodes 20 and dust collecting electrodes 22 are hammered by hammers 44 with DC voltage being applied to between the dust collecting electrode 22 and the discharge electrode 20 by a DC power source 42.
