A lift device, in particular a stairway lift, comprising a platform adapted for carrying a wheelchair, which wheelchair, in a normal direction of movement, can roll on and off the platform in at least two opposite directions, and comprising protective means which can be swung up and are connected to the platform, which protective means, in a first, swung-up position, are located outside the path of movement of a wheelchair and, in a second, swung-down position, prevent the wheelchair from rolling off the platform, at least in a normal direction of movement, wherein the protective means comprise a swivel arm which is fastened to a pivot, which pivot, at least in one, preferably in two directions, includes an acute angle to the normal direction of movement of the wheelchair, and which swivel arm, in the second position, extends at least partially approximately transversely and partially approximately parallel to the normal direction of movement of the wheelchair.
