The stepping switch has at least 2 ratchet switch positions with a contact carrier (1) and a bridging element (8), used to provide an electrical contact between a pair of contact elements (2,3) mounted on the contact carrier. The contact carrier and the bridging element cooperate to provide the ratchet mechanism, with the bridging element blocking the rotary movement of the contact carrier and bridging a pair of contacts in each blocking position.
