A hose constituted by a woven, braided or knitted jacket having a thin impermeable lining and an external cover is manufactured by introducing into the jacket 1 a lining tube 2 of rubber or expandable plastics having a composite surface layer formed by an inner abrasionresistant sub-layer 3 and an outer flexible sub-layer 4, subjecting the assembly to internal air pressure and external heat to cause the outer sub-layer to exude outwardly, applying pressure to the exuded material to form sheaths around the yarns of the jacket, continuing application of internal pressure and heat to cause the inner sub-layer to exude through the outer sub-layer and jacket to form projecting spikes and applying pressure to spikes to form an abrasion resistant cover. The two sub-layers 3 and 4 may be of suitable compounded polymer blends of nitrile rubber and polyvinyl chloride. Alternatively, the inner sub-layer may be polyurethane or a blend of polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride, the outer sub-layer being plasticized polyvinylchloride, and the lining tube being a blend of nitrile rubber and polyvinyl chloride. As a further alternative, the inner sub-layer may be a polychloroprene containing a carbon black filler, the outer sublayer a polychloroprene flexible compound, and the inner lining tube polychloroprene. The lining tube may also be of nylon. In a particular example, specific additives are given, the lining tube is extruded, and the textile jacket is woven with nylon wefts and warps of " Terylene " (Registered Trade Mark). Two travelling air ovens are used for heating the hose and each trailing three peripherally-distributed rollers for rolling down the exuded material of the inner and outer sublayers. In a modification, the outer sub-layer is itself constituted by an inner portion and an outer portion which form outer and inner sheathings respectively on the jacket yarns.
