Coil reforming chamber

In a rolling mill having a reforming chamber with a cylindrical wall (26) through which rings (20) of hot rolled steel rod descend along a vertical path (P) from the delivery end of a conveyor (22) onto a support surface (40) of a pallet (38) on an underlying carrier (44) which has an upstanding stem (42) around which the rings accumulate to form a cylindrical coil. An apparatus for subdividing the coil comprises: (a) first intercepting members (30) supported independently of the carrier at a level above the support surface; (b) first pistons (32) for adjusting the first intercepting members between retracted positions clear of the path and operative positions projecting into the path to interrupt the descent of rings towards the support surface; (c) second intercepting members in the form of rotatable arms (60) having lateral fingers (62) supported on the carrier at a level beneath the first intercepting members; and (d) second operating means including a second piston for adjusting the second intercepting members between retracted positions clear of the path and operative positions projecting into the path to subdivide the coil into a lower segment comprising the rings previously accumulated beneath and an upper segment axially spaced from the lower segment by a gap occupied by the second intercepting members fingers and comprising rings to be subsequently accumulated above following retraction of the first intercepting members. Also claimed is a downender means at the coil discharge station to rotate the coil segments to a horizontal position.
