<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electron emitter consisting of improved diamond. SOLUTION: An electron emitter includes a silicon base board 20 which has been doped by an n-type region 21. A diamond layer 24 on the base board 20 is doped by means of ion implantation, in such a way as to form a region 27 having a thin insulative region 28 equipped with a p-type dopant profile which is provided with a gradient such as to separate the p-type region from the n-type region on the board. The upper surface of the diamond layer 24 is exposed to the p-type region through an opening in an electrode 25. A voltage is impressed between this electrode 25 on the upper surface of the board 20 and an electrode 23 formed on the lower surface, and from the n-type region 21, electrons tunnel via the insulative region 28 to the p-type region 27, emitting electrons from the exposed region 29. A lamp or display includes a plurality of such electron emitters and contains a decompressed gas ionized by the emitted electrons, and therefore, emission is generated, which results in production of a light-emitting layer on a transparent window 3, and as a result a visible emission occurs.</p> |
