A drying cylinder (10) comprises a cylindrical shell (12) with head members (14,16) at either end and is mounted for rotation about its central longitudinal axis. A gas fired burner assembly (24) is mounted in the interior of the cylinder and comprises a plurality of burner segments (28) which transmit heat to the shell (12) by infrared radiation.
