The device comprises at least one supports (3) having a first web (5) which rests on the ground, and a second web (6) connected to the first at right angles and attached to the spar (2) of the ladder. A clamp (4,10) engages the second web and the spar and can be opened for attachment. The support is stiffened by a brace (8) which extends between the free end of the first web and the free end of the second web. A notch (9) is provided in the ends of the first and second webs, in which the brace is inserted so as to form a stable triangle with the two webs.
