As shown in Figs. 1 to 3 an apparatus for drawing an undrawn tow of synthetic filaments while the tow in the form of a sheet of parallel filaments is being passed through a bath of hot liquid comprises a pair of feed rolls 1, a pair of draw rolls 2, a bath 4 containing a hot liquid 3, guide rollers 5 and 6 positioned above the level of the liquid 3, and tow immersing arrangement 7 adapted to be raised to the position shown in Fig. 1 or lowered to the position shown in Fig. 2, whereby when the means 7 is in the raised position the tow rises or is raised above the level of the bath liquid and when the means is in the lowered position the tow is immersed in the hot bath liquid and travels therethrough while it is being drawn. The arrangement 7 comprises rods 9 by means of which the guide bars or rollers 8 under which the tow passes are secured to a bracket 10. The bracket 10 is supported by piston-rods 12 of pistons actuated by means of pneumatic cylinders 11 mounted on the support 13. In the event of the travelling of the tow ceasing due to some fault occurring in the treating apparatus, the guide bars or rollers are quickly raised and the tension to which the tow is still subjected causes it to rise out of the hot bath liquid. Alternatively the raising of the guide means 7 may cause the tow to be lifted out of the bath liquid by the members 15 and 16 shown in Figs. 5 and 6, respectively. The bath liquid is preferably heated by circulating it through an external boiler, the bath liquid being withdrawn from the bottom of the bath near the draw roll end of the bath, pumped through the boiler and returned to the bottom of the bath near the feed roll end of the bath. In order to cause the filaments to be drawn within a short length of the path of travel of the tow at the first guide bar 8 the bath may be shallow below the guide bar and the heated bath liquid caused to flow through the bath countercurrent to the direction of travel of the tow, the linear velocity of flow of the bath liquid being at a maximum below the guide bar 8, which in this case is fixed and non-rotatable. A chamber for treating the drawn tow with steam may be provided adjacent to the outlet end of the draw bath so that jets of steam may be directed on to the upper and lower surfaces of the tow immediately after it has emerged from the draw bath and travels through the steam treatment chamber.
