The invention concerns a method for identifying a data channel receiving by means of a receiver equipment among a data flow transmitted on a set of data channels to each of which a predetermined channel frequency is associated. This method comprises the following steps: acquiring an input signal RF containing the data flow upstream of the receiving equipment; generating a scrambling signal the frequency of which is varied in a scanning frequency range including channel frequencies; inserting this scrambling signal in the input signal RF; acquiring a synchronising signal derived from the receiving equipment; detecting the frequency corresponding destabilising of the synchronising signal; and determining the data channel associated with the detected frequency. The invention is particularly applicable in data acquiring and processing devices used for measuring television audiences.
