PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide convenience of user by retrieving a mode capable of printing to indicate it when a real quantity of residual ink is small and by indicating a message for exchanging a cartridge when there is not the mode capable of printing. SOLUTION: A printer 101 detects a real quantity of residual ink by using a residual ink detecting sensor 109 for an ink cartridge 108. A calculation controlling section 113 in a host computer 102 calculates a quantity of ink required for performing desired printing by a printing mode designated by a user from a total number of data print-outs, an amount of printing data and an ejection quantity of ink by each one nozzle at the mode. When the equation of 'the real quantity of residual ink < the required quantity of the ink' is true, it is judged whether or not there is a printing mode capable of printing by the real quantity of the residual ink. When there is the printing mode, the printing mode is indicated on a display section 104 to recommend changing of the printing mode to the user. When there is not the printing mode, a massage for exchanging the ink cartridge 108 is indicated on the display section 104 to recommend changing of the ink cartridge 108 to the user. |
