A head position controller computes position control information for locating the head on a target cylinder based on the head position information and the estimated position information of the head. Cylinder information recorded on the storage medium is made up of an address of a predetermined number of digits given for each cylinder and a correct address corresponding to a part of the cylinder address. The head position controller computes position control information based on the cylinder address when a first difference between a read signal of the cylinder address and a read signal of the correct address is within a fixed range, computes the position control information based on the cylinder address when the first difference is beyond the fixed range and a second difference between the cylinder address and the estimated position information of the head is smaller than a third difference between the correct address and the estimated position information of the head, and computes the position control information based on the estimated position information of the head when the second difference is larger than the third difference.
