Glass surface is treated with a pyrolysable compound of Sn or Ti (preferably SnCl4); heated to or above the pyrolysis temp; cooling to a temp. 233 degrees C; and applying another coating, being the reaction prod. of an org. cpd. contg. OH group(s) (pref. alcohols variously substd., or their polymers) and a copolymer of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride. This method is esp. suitable for protecting glass containers. Used in the food industry against scratching or other surface damage which results in a sharp decrease of the mechanical strength of the whole container. |
