A movable platen (22) for an injection molding machine (10) in which the platen (22) is in the form of a box-like structure that includes spaced front and rear plates (70, 72). The platen includes a plura lity of longitudinally extending beam members (74) that interconnect the front and rear plates (70, 72) and are positioned in paral lel relationship and in a generally rectangular array. The rear plate (72) includes on its rear face (84) a plurality of vertically ext ending pillow block members (44) pivotally carrying a pivot pin (46), the pillow block members (44) having inclined sides that interse ct with the rear face (84) of the rear plate (72). Extending across the front race of the rear plate (72) and opposite from the end s of the respective pillow blocks (44) are an upper and a lower transverse beam member (104), each of which is formed integrally wit h the rear plate (72) to provide additional structural stiffening and thereby permit the rear plate (72) to be thinner and lighter.
