PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an overshoot quantity of a tilted angle of a power roller supported freely rotationally in a trunnion which is feedback controlled when a gear shift ratio fluctuates greatly in a toroidal type continuously variable transmission. SOLUTION: A composite displacement quantity of an axial directional displacement quantity Y of a trunnion 63 and a tilting angle displacement quantityθof a power roller 66 is detected by means of a precession cam 53, and for obtaining a target gear shift ratio, feedback control for hydraulic pressures Pup and Pdown working on a hydraulic cylinder 72 is carried out. The whole stroke quantities La, Lb of the trunnion 63 are set to be higher than those of trunnions 33, 37 in which no precession cam 53 is arranged, and a tilting speed of the power roller 66 during a gear shift action is braked from other power rollers 6, 9 on the basis of their self synchronization functions, so that an overshoot quantity of the tilting angle can be reduced.
