The body (1) of the container is similar to the conventional containers, which are picked up and emptied by refuse collection vehicles. It has side lugs (15) which are engaged by the vehicle lifting mechanism. The hinged lid (3) Has closure hooks (5) which clip over a bar (6) along the front side opposite the hinge. Fixed inside the lid are two inflatable bellows (9). The lower ends of the bellows are attached to a rectangular pressure plate (10). When the container is "full" with uncompressed refuse, the user closes and clamps the lid. Pneumatic pressure, e.g. from a pump or compressed air cylinder, is applied to the bellows via a valve (7). The plate (10) compresses the refuse. When the pressure is released, the bellows deflate, raising the plate.
