One surgical device includes a transducer assembly (82) adapted to vibrate at an ultrasonic frequency in response to electrical energy. A torque limiting device (130) coupled to the second transmission component (86) limits the torque when the second end of the first transmission component (84) is coupled to the first end of the second transmission component (86). A method of attaching a transmission component is also provided. A method in accordance with the present invention includes the steps of providing a handpiece assembly (50) having an integral torque limiting mechanism (130) and a first transmission component (84), and threading a second transmission component (86) onto the first transmission component (84) of the handpiece assembly (50). The method also includes the steps of rotating a sleeve of the andpiece assembly (50) until the second transmission component (86) has been tightened to a predetermined torque on the first transmission component (84) of the handpiece assembly (50).
