The light unit consists of a base (11) formed from e.g. metal which has a translucent cover (14) formed e.g. of glass. The cover is connected to the base by its rim, using one or more pivots (30,31). Each pivot is in the form of a cylindrical projection on the side of the base and a flexible slotted lug on the cover which engages with it. The pivots allow the cover to be separated from the base and turned into an open position, giving access to the interior of the lamp without being detached from it.
